ID-305 Practice Studio I

Studio course that focuses on the development of comprehensive design solutions for the practice areas of commerce and entertainment, such as retail and hospitality. Creative solutions are developed through case studies, innovative design concepts, and branding. This studio emphasizes principles of sustainability, wayfinding, and security, as well as oral, visual and written design communication. Freehand drafting, millwork detailing, rudimentary selections of architectural and interior materials, modeling, and perspectives are developed. 
Studio. Prerequisite: Grade of C- or better in ID 204 (3).

Course Objectives

  1. Critically analyze the interior construction and building systems of a base building shell to create and present design solutions that meet the needs of a specific program and its design concept;
  2. Understand the design process as it relates to the client and a real-world design teams including consultants in areas such as lighting, mechanical, furniture, material selections, construction and millwork;
  3. Comprehend and apply basic building and life safety codes, fire suppression and detection devices, universal design standards, and appropriate finishes, furnishes and materials;
  4. Incorporate design theory, user needs and functions, branded identity of the client, principles of sustainable design to the development of interiors for retail and hospitality;
  5. Further develop professional presentation communication skills through oral, visual, and written techniques, such as, drawing skills, rendering, drafting, and furniture and finish selections for commercial interiors.

ID-605 Graduate Practice Studio I

Studio focusing on development of comprehensive design solutions for the practice areas of commerce and entertainment, including retail and hospitality. Observation and/or behavior mapping studies, literature reviews, innovative design concepts, and brand identity are used to create evidence-based design solutions that emphasize creativity, principles of sustainability, wayfinding, and security. 
Studio. Prerequisites: FA 104 or equivalent; B- or better in ID 122 and ID 502. (3)

Course Objectives

  1. Define the relevant aspects of a design problem; investigate, synthesize, and apply the appropriate design theories; observation study and research findings; user needs and functions; branded identity of the client; principles of wayfinding, security, and sustainable design to solve interior design problems in retail and hospitality;
  2. Critically analyze the interior construction and building systems of a base building shell to create design solutions that meet the needs of a specific interior design program and its design concept;
  3. Conduct observation and/or behavior mapping studies that systematically analyze and evaluate behavior and movement of users in commerce or entertainment spaces;
  4. Comprehend and apply the design process as it relates to the client and design teams, including consultants in areas such as lighting, mechanical, furniture, material selections, construction and millwork;
  5. Apply the iterative design process to generate multiple responses and concepts to a design problem and, through analysis and synthesis of data, choose the best solution; 
  6. Select and apply basic building and life safety codes and universal design standards;
  7. Formulate creative design responses that apply the elements and principles of design; select and apply color with regards to its multiple purposes, such as behavioral, aesthetic, and symbolic considerations; details; and appropriate finishes, furnishes and materials;
  8. Demonstrate design solutions that effectively integrate distribution systems, such as power, mechanical, data/voice telecommunications and plumbing; fire suppression and detection devices;  
  9. Demonstrate professional presentation communication skills through oral, visual, and written techniques, such as, drawing skills, rendering, drafting, detailing, and furniture and finish selections for commercial interiors.
