Phase 1: Journal Summaries


Assignment Overview

Students will complete a written analysis of three (3) journal articles related to the identified area of practice and/or research for the senior capstone project. The student is expected to provide a brief summary of the studies, including the study’s hypothesis, research methodology and findings. Preliminary correlations to the student’s capstone practice area should be provided. 

Assignment will be peer reviewed twice, with revision due in Week 5 and in the final program brief. A minimum of 900 words. 

Assignment Specifics

Week 1  /  AUG 26: Introduction to Evidence Based Design

In class
Overview of research databases, sources of information, library visit.

Assignment
Identify area of study for senior capstone including keywords for at least three journal searches. Find six (6) journal articles related to area of study. Highlight each article’s hypothesis, research methodology, and findings for group discussion in Week 3.

Week 2  /  SEP 2: No class – Labor day

Assignment
Read chapter 5. Robinson, L. B., & Parman, A. T. (2010). Research-inspired design: A step-by-step guide for interior designers. New York: Fairchild Books.

Week 3  /  SEP 9: Peer-review journal articles and topic

Before class
Bring two printed/stapled copies of each article from the week 1 assignment to class. 
In class (peer review)
Students present area of focus and 6 highlighted journal articles. Students receive feedback narrowing the journal articles to the three most central to the topic. In some instances, students may need to seek additional articles based on the peer review.
Assignment
Students will complete a 300 word analysis of one (1) journal article related to the identified area of practice and/or research. The student is expected to provide a brief summary of the article, including the study’s hypothesis, research methodology, and findings. 

Preliminary correlations to the student’s capstone practice area should be provided.

Week 4  /  SEP 16: Peer-review first journal summary

Before class
Students bring three printed/stapled copies of the 300 word journal summary to class for peer review. 
In class (peer review)
Students are divided into small groups that read and provided feedback for each student. 
Assignment
Based on peer review and instructor feedback, students revise journal summary for re-submission in week 5.

Week 5  /  SEP 23: Student conferences

In class
Students are divided into small groups that read and provided feedback for each student. 

Week 6  /  SEP 30: Project submission
Deadline
Student submits 900 word topic and journal summary at the beginning of class via google docs.
