For Employers

Thank you in advance for supporting the Interior Design program at Marymount University through your internship and job postings.

SUBMIT AN UNPAID INTERNSHIP

Marymount’s Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design program prepares each student for a career as a creative, ethically responsible, proficient interior designer.

We view the required internship experience as an integral component of each student's education. The internship provides broad exposure to practice including programming, schematic design, design development, and construction documentation that we cannot replicate in the classroom. While each internship site may not be able to provide hands-on experience in each phase of the design, we encourage students to seek positions that will at a minimum provide observational experience across the design process.

Most internships require 120 hours of work experience which must be completed in one academic semester. Our academic internship information package describes the roles and responsibilities of the student, internship, and university during the academic internship semester

To submit an internshipwe need you to complete a brief online form on Marymount's Jobs4Saints. When creating your position, please limit it to interior design majors (this makes it easier for our students to locate in the job database).

And finally, please call Marymount's Center for Career Services -- (703) 284-5960 -- with questions.

Thank you again for your support.

CRITERIA FOR UNPAID INTERNSHIPS

Marymount University's Interior Design department supports the Department of Labor's criteria for unpaid internships. All of the following six criteria must be applied when determining if a student may participate in an unpaid internship.
  1. The internship, even though it includes actual operation of the facilities of the employer, is similar to training which would be given in an educational environment;
  2. The internship experience is for the benefit of the intern;
  3. The intern does not displace regular employees, but works under close supervision of existing staff;
  4. The employer that provides the training derives no immediate advantage from the activities of the intern; and on occasion its operations may actually be impeded;
  5. The intern is not necessarily entitled to a job at the conclusion of the internship; and
  6. The employer and the intern understand that the intern is not entitled to wages for the time spent in the internship.
